Why do top artists work with producers?

All studios aren’t the same. Most supply free coffee, but no producer. An engineer records what you play. A mixing engineer makes what you play sound great. A mastering engineer puts the final polish on the whole project.

These are all important, but a producer does so much more. A producer helps match the talent with good songs, makes good songs great, assists in capturing a stunning performance, and knows how to make everyone achieve the impossible. An artistic producer also often writes and helps with the arrangements. A producer will also supervise the mixing and mastering. The successful producer will balance the artistic and commercial considerations in your project with diplomatic, supportive and good-humored efficiency.

The Beatles worked with George Martin. Sting relied on Hugh Padgham. Mariah Carey had Walter Afanasieff... If top talent depends on producers, shouldn't you?
